The lie of the land in Herefordshire and Worcestershire
Herefordshire is one of England's quietest counties, with Hereford its only city, plus Leominster, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye. Orchards and hop fields fill much of the countryside, and the River Wye winds through it towards Wales.
Worcestershire is busier. Worcester sits on the Severn, with Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Droitwich and Evesham around it. The Malvern Hills National Landscape rises sharply from the plain between the two counties, and the Wye Valley National Landscape covers the south of Herefordshire. The Cotswolds edge reaches Broadway in the east.
The east of the area feeds off Birmingham, with Redditch and Bromsgrove acting as commuter towns. The west is more remote. Even so, a lane on the edge of a town can be busy at odd hours when the wider countryside is silent.
Getting about safely
The M5 runs north to south through Worcestershire, joined by the M42 near Bromsgrove and the M50, which links Ross-on-Wye to the M5. West of that, travel relies on A roads. The A49 runs north to south through Hereford and Leominster, the A44 and A438 cross east to west and the A449 links Worcester to Malvern. Many are single carriageway and slow.
Rail runs from Worcester to Birmingham, to Hereford via Malvern and to London via the Cotswold Line through Evesham. Hereford sits on the Welsh Marches line. Last trains leave early, and several country stations are unstaffed. Hereford has no motorway, so a late journey home from a rural place can be long. Book a taxi if you can.
The Severn and the Wye are both prone to flooding. Roads around Worcester, Upton-upon-Severn, Tewkesbury and the Evesham Vale can disappear under water for days in winter. In the hills, lanes are narrow and sunken, with blind bends and loose gravel. Mist forms quickly in the river valleys, and signal drops on the Malverns and in the Wye gorge. Keep your phone charged. Carry a torch and a warm layer, since help can be a long way off. Leave extra time for the drive back, because tired driving on dark lanes is a real risk.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Herefordshire and Worcestershire
Is dogging legal in Herefordshire and Worcestershire?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Herefordshire and Worcestershire?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Does one guide cover both counties?
Yes. Herefordshire and Worcestershire share a guide, covering Hereford, Worcester, Malvern, Kidderminster, Redditch, Evesham and the border country.
When do the rivers flood?
Mostly from late autumn to early spring after heavy rain. Roads beside the Severn and Wye can close at short notice, so check road reports first.
Which guide covers Birmingham?
Use the West Midlands guide for Birmingham and the Black Country. This one covers the counties to its south-west.
