The lie of the land in Shropshire
Shropshire is large and thinly populated. Shrewsbury, the county town, sits in a loop of the River Severn. Telford, a new town built in the 1960s, is the biggest settlement, and Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Whitchurch and Market Drayton are the other main towns.
The Shropshire Hills National Landscape fills the south-west, with the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge and the Clee Hills. North of them, the land flattens into the Shropshire plain and the Cheshire border country. The Severn cuts through the Ironbridge Gorge before it leaves the county.
Because the county is so quiet, a handful of towns and roads carry nearly all the traffic. Visitors come from Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Cheshire and mid Wales, so a lane can be busy on a night when you would expect nobody.
Getting about safely
Shropshire has only one motorway, the short M54, which links Telford to Wolverhampton and the M6. Everywhere else you use A roads. The A5 runs past Shrewsbury to Oswestry, the A49 runs north to south through Ludlow and Whitchurch, and the A458 and A41 link the east. Many are single carriageway, and slow farm vehicles are common.
Rail centres on Shrewsbury. Trains run to Birmingham, Chester, Hereford and the Welsh coast via the Cambrian line, and Telford has its own station. Services are sparse in the evening, and many smaller places have no station at all. A taxi from a rural spot can be costly or hard to find, so plan your way home.
The hills bring their own risks. Mist, snow and ice settle on high roads such as those over the Long Mynd, and mobile signal is poor in many valleys. The Severn floods in wet winters and has closed roads at Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth. Lanes are narrow, sunken and unlit, and deer and sheep wander onto them. Drive slowly and tell someone your plan. Leave extra time for the drive back, because tired driving on dark hill roads is a real risk. Fuel stations are few after dark, so fill up in town before you head out, and carry a torch and a warm layer.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.
The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Shropshire
Is dogging legal in Shropshire?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Shropshire?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Does the Shropshire guide include Telford?
Yes. It covers Telford and Shrewsbury as well as Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Whitchurch and Market Drayton.
How easy is it to get around Shropshire after dark?
Often not easily. Only the M54 is a motorway, buses are limited and the hills are unlit. Allow extra time and fill the tank before you leave.
Which guide do I need for the Welsh side of the border?
For Powys, use the Dyfed and Mid Wales guide. For Wrexham and the north-east, use the North Wales guide.
