The lie of the land in West Midlands
The West Midlands is England's second-largest urban area. Birmingham sits at its centre, with Coventry to the east, Wolverhampton to the north-west and Solihull to the south-east. The Black Country, which takes in Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall, runs between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
Much of the county is built up, but not all of it. Green belt keeps Solihull apart from Coventry, and the old canal network cuts through the towns as quiet towpaths. The county has no protected National Park or National Landscape area of its own. The nearest big ones, Cannock Chase and the Malvern Hills, are in neighbouring counties.
That mix matters for travel. Most people here are never more than a short drive from a motorway, so a quiet-looking edge of town can still draw cars from across the conurbation. Plenty of people also cross the county boundary into Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire for more open country.
Getting about safely
Four motorways meet here. The M6 passes Birmingham and Coventry, the M5 runs through the Black Country, the M42 curls round the south and the M6 Toll offers a paid bypass to the north. Gravelly Hill Interchange, better known as Spaghetti Junction, handles the traffic where the M6 meets the A38(M). Rush hour is slow, and a single crash can back up the whole network.
Rail is easy for a trip into the centre. Birmingham New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill, plus Coventry and Wolverhampton, link to the Cross-City Line and the West Midlands Metro. Services thin out late in the evening, and some suburban lines stop well before midnight. Check the last train home before you leave, and keep money back for a licensed taxi.
Away from the main roads, expect unlit lanes, industrial estates that empty after dark and canal towpaths with no lighting. A towpath beside deep water is a bad place to be on a dark night. Phone signal is usually good in the conurbation but can drop on the lanes out past Solihull. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about West Midlands
Is dogging legal in West Midlands?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in West Midlands?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Does this guide cover Birmingham and the Black Country?
Yes. It covers the whole metropolitan county: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall.
Which guide should I read for the countryside around Birmingham?
Open country starts just over the county line. Use the Staffordshire guide for Cannock Chase and the Trent valley, Warwickshire for the Avon valley and Herefordshire and Worcestershire for the Malverns and the Severn.
Is it easy to travel here without a car?
In the towns, yes. Trains, trams and buses run well until the evening. After that the choices shrink, so plan your return before you set out.
