The lie of the land in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire has three clear parts. In the east, the Cotswolds rise as a limestone escarpment, with Cirencester, Stroud, Tetbury, Painswick and Stow-on-the-Wold among the towns. In the middle, the Severn Vale holds Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. In the west, the Forest of Dean lies between the Severn and the Wye, with Cinderford, Coleford and Lydney as its main places.

The Cotswolds National Landscape covers much of the east and south. The Wye Valley National Landscape touches the Forest of Dean side, and the Severn itself is a wide, muddy tidal river with a long floodplain. Gloucester and Cheltenham are fairly built up. Most of the rest is farmland, wood and stone villages.

Drivers arrive from Bristol, Birmingham, Oxfordshire and South Wales. Some quiet lanes and woodland edges draw a steady crowd even on mid-week nights, with no good reason anyone can give.

Getting about safely

The M5 runs north to south through the Severn Vale past Gloucester and Cheltenham. The A40 links Cheltenham with Oxford and Gloucester with Wales, the A417 climbs the Cotswold escarpment towards Cirencester, and the A38, A46 and A429 Fosse Way cross the county. In the Forest, the A48 and A4136 are slower, winding roads. Cheltenham races and big events slow the roads around the town.

The Bristol to Birmingham line stops at Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa. A separate line runs from Gloucester through Stroud and Kemble towards London Paddington, and trains from Lydney run to Cardiff. The Forest of Dean has little rail. Last trains leave earlier than many people expect, so check yours or book a taxi home.

The Severn and its tributaries flood in winter, and low roads in the Vale can close with little notice. The river is tidal and the mud is soft, so stay away from the banks after dark. In the Forest, sheep wander the roads at night, and woodland lanes have no lighting. Cotswold lanes are steep and narrow with drystone walls, and signal can fade in the valleys. Keep your phone charged and tell someone your plans.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Gloucestershire

Is dogging legal in Gloucestershire?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Gloucestershire?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Does this guide include the Forest of Dean?

Yes, along with the Cotswolds and the Severn Vale. The Forest is the part of the county with the fewest train links, so plan to drive and have a way home arranged.

What happens to roads when the Severn floods?

Low roads around Gloucester, Tewkesbury and the Vale can close for days. Check council road closures and the Environment Agency flood warnings before you set off.

Which guide do I use for Bristol or Oxford?

Use the Bristol and Avon guide to the south and the Oxfordshire guide to the east.
