The lie of the land in Dyfed and Mid Wales

This is the biggest and emptiest part of Wales. Carmarthen, Llanelli, Haverfordwest, Pembroke, Milford Haven, Fishguard, Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Lampeter, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Welshpool are the main towns, and many are small. Between them lie farms, forests and hills with long gaps in settlement.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park wraps around the south-west, and the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park sits in the south of Powys. The Cambrian Mountains fill the middle, with reservoirs such as the Elan Valley. Cardigan Bay runs along the west, with a mix of cliffs, harbours and beaches.

Distances matter. Cardiff and Swansea are far away, and Shrewsbury is the nearest big town for many people in Powys. Quiet rural spots can still turn busy for no clear reason.

Getting about safely

The M4 ends near Carmarthen, and the A40 and A48 carry on west to Pembrokeshire. The A487 follows the coast from Fishguard to Aberystwyth, the A470 runs north to south through Powys, and the A44 and A483 cross the middle. Signs are in Welsh and English, and many roads are single carriageway with slow farm traffic. Allow far more time than the map suggests.

Rail is thin. The West Wales line runs from Swansea to Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock and Fishguard. The Cambrian line links Shrewsbury with Aberystwyth, and the Heart of Wales line crosses the hills from Llanelli to Shrewsbury. Few trains run in the evening, and some stations are unstaffed. Ferries to Ireland leave from Fishguard and Pembroke Dock.

Phone signal fails often in the hills, valleys and on the coast, so download maps first. Roads are narrow, unlit and often unfenced, and sheep and cattle sit on them at night. Mountain fog and ice come quickly in Powys. Cliffs along the Pembrokeshire coast are high and unstable, and Cardigan Bay has strong tides and soft estuary mud. Fuel stations are far apart and close early. Fill the tank, tell someone your route and set a time to check in.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Dyfed and Mid Wales

Is dogging legal in Dyfed and Mid Wales?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Dyfed and Mid Wales?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

How far apart are places in Dyfed and Mid Wales?

Far. Haverfordwest to Aberystwyth is around two hours by road, and Brecon to Welshpool takes longer than many people expect. Always allow extra time.

Will my phone work across the area?

Not everywhere. Signal is weak in the Cambrian Mountains, in valleys and along parts of the coast. Download offline maps and tell someone your route before you leave.

Which guide covers the towns to the south and north?

Swansea Bay and the Glamorgan Valleys cover the south. North Wales covers Gwynedd and the coast beyond Machynlleth.
