The lie of the land in Warwickshire

Warwickshire is mostly farmland and small towns. Warwick is the county town, with Leamington Spa next door, Stratford-upon-Avon to the south-west, Rugby to the east and Nuneaton and Bedworth in the north. The River Avon runs through Warwick and Stratford.

The north of the county is more industrial, with old coalfield towns around Nuneaton and Atherstone. The south is quieter. The far south-east corner touches the edge of the Cotswolds National Landscape, and the Feldon, the flat farmland south of Warwick, is open and thinly peopled.

Warwickshire sits right next to Birmingham and Coventry. That means rural roads close to the West Midlands boundary can see city traffic late on, while the far south stays empty. Know which side of the county you are in, and plan for the traffic that goes with it. Carry a torch and a paper or offline map, because the countryside here gets properly dark.

Getting about safely

The M40 runs south-east from Warwick towards Oxford, the M6 and M69 cut across the north and east, and the M42 clips the north-west corner. The A46 links Warwick to Coventry and Stratford, the A45 runs by Rugby and the A5 follows the old Watling Street along the northern edge. Rush-hour jams are heavy near the motorway junctions around Warwick and Coventry.

Rail is better than many people expect. The Chiltern line links Leamington Spa and Warwick to London Marylebone, Rugby sits on the West Coast Main Line and a line runs from Stratford-upon-Avon into Birmingham. Late trains are few, and some country stations are unstaffed and poorly lit. Check the last service before you go.

The Avon and its tributaries flood in wet winters, and roads near Warwick and Stratford can close under water. Canals such as the Grand Union and the Oxford run through the county, and their towpaths have no lighting. Country lanes in the south are narrow with high hedges, so visibility is short. Keep your phone charged and share your location. Leave extra time for the drive back, because tired driving on dark lanes is a real risk.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Warwickshire

Is dogging legal in Warwickshire?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Warwickshire?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

What does the Warwickshire guide cover?

The whole county, from Nuneaton and Rugby in the north and east to Stratford-upon-Avon and the Feldon in the south.

Do floods affect travel in Warwickshire?

They can. After heavy rain the Avon and smaller streams spill over, and roads near Warwick and Stratford sometimes close. Check local road reports in winter.

Which guide covers Coventry?

Coventry is in the West Midlands guide. This one covers the county around it.
