The lie of the land in Cheshire

Cheshire is mostly green. Chester is the county city, and Crewe, Macclesfield, Nantwich, Northwich, Knutsford and Congleton are the main towns. Warrington and Widnes sit in the north, and Ellesmere Port and Neston lie on the Dee estuary side of the Wirral.

The middle of the county is the Cheshire Plain, a broad, low area of dairy farms, meres and canals. The Sandstone Ridge rises out of it near Frodsham and Tarporley. In the east, the land climbs to the edge of the Peak District National Park above Macclesfield. The Dee estuary forms the western boundary with Wales.

Wealthy villages, golf clubs and commuter belts sit side by side with real countryside. With so many lanes and so few street lights, a quiet field gateway can look busy on a dry evening for no clear reason.

Getting about safely

The M6 runs through the east of the county past Crewe and Knutsford. The M56 heads west from Manchester Airport towards Chester, the M53 runs down the Wirral side, and the M62 crosses the north near Warrington. The A556, A500, A51 and A49 link the towns. The Mersey Gateway bridge at Runcorn is tolled. The A537 over the Cat and Fiddle moor is a famous high road that closes often in ice and snow.

Crewe is a major rail junction, with lines to London, Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and North Wales. Chester has direct trains to Liverpool, Manchester and Holyhead. Smaller stations such as Knutsford and Northwich see fewer late trains. Check your last train and keep a taxi number to hand, because lanes between villages are long and unlit.

Cheshire has gentle weather, but not harmless. Fog settles on the plain on cold nights, and heavy rain floods low roads near the Dee, the Weaver and the meres. The canals run beside many lanes with no barriers, so take extra care in the dark. Phone signal is usually good on the plain but patchy on the Peak edge. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Cheshire

Is dogging legal in Cheshire?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Cheshire?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Which parts of Cheshire does this guide cover?

The whole ceremonial county, including Warrington, Halton, Chester and the Peak edge. For the Wirral peninsula's Birkenhead and Wallasey side, use the Merseyside guide.

How do I get across Cheshire at night without a car?

Crewe and Chester have the best late trains. Between villages, buses are thin and often finish early, so a booked taxi is the safest way home.

Is the Cat and Fiddle road safe in winter?

It often isn't. The A537 climbs high on exposed moor, and ice, snow and fog shut it regularly. Sunset falls around 16:25 in January in Chester, so plan to be off high roads before dark.
