The lie of the land in Bristol and Avon
This guide covers four council areas: the city of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. Bristol is the big city. Bath sits to the south-east, and Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead line the coast. Yate, Thornbury and Keynsham are the larger towns in between.
The land is varied. The Avon Gorge cuts through Bristol, and the Cotswold edge rises behind Bath and in the east of South Gloucestershire. The Mendip Hills National Landscape reaches into North Somerset, and the flat moors and levels lie around Weston and Yatton. To the north and west, the Severn Estuary has some of the biggest tides in the world.
People travel in from Gloucestershire, Wales, Somerset and Wiltshire as well as from the city itself. Quiet corners of the farmland ring and the Mendip lanes can be busier than you would guess.
Getting about safely
The M4 and M5 meet near Almondsbury, north of Bristol. The M32 runs into the city centre, and the M49 serves Avonmouth and the Severn Beach side. The M48 and M4 cross the Severn into Wales, and high winds can close or restrict the older bridge. The A38, A4, A370 and A369 carry most local traffic, and Bristol rush hour is slow almost everywhere. Parts of central Bristol also have a Clean Air Zone for older vehicles.
Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway handle the main rail links to London, Birmingham, Cardiff and the south-west. Bath Spa and Weston-super-Mare have their own services, and local trains run to Severn Beach. Last trains leave earlier than many people expect. Check yours, or book a taxi home, before you set off.
Be careful near the water. The Severn has an enormous tidal range, and the mudflats off Weston-super-Mare are soft and dangerous. The tide comes in fast across flat ground. Keep well clear of mud and shoreline roads after dark. Mendip and Cotswold lanes are steep, narrow and unlit, and signal drops in the gorge and valleys. Tell a friend where you are going.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Bristol and Avon
Is dogging legal in Bristol and Avon?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Bristol and Avon?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Is Bath part of this guide?
Yes. Bath, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset are all included with Bristol. For the rest of Somerset, use the Somerset guide.
What are the main hazards on the coast side?
Fast tides, soft mud and exposed roads near the Severn Estuary. Stay off the mudflats, check tide times and avoid shoreline roads in rough weather.
Which guide do I use across the Severn?
Across the Severn lies Wales. Use the Gwent and Newport guide for the Newport side of the crossing.
