The lie of the land in Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Wigan. The city centre sits in the middle, and the old mill towns surround it like spokes on a wheel. It is the biggest built-up area in the North West.
The edges are wilder than most people expect. The Peak District National Park reaches the eastern boroughs around Saddleworth and Longdendale, and the West Pennine Moors rise above Bolton and Bury. To the south, the Cheshire Plain begins at the edge of Stockport and Trafford. Green belt, canals and river valleys such as the Irwell and the Mersey thread through the built-up area.
Most journeys here are short hops between towns, with plenty of commuters on the move. On the moorland fringe, a quiet lane can still be crowded after dark for no reason a passer-by would spot.
Getting about safely
The M60 orbital motorway circles the city and ties everything together. The M62 crosses the north, the M56 heads towards the airport and Cheshire, and the M61, M66 and M602 feed into the centre. Junctions on the M60 jam at rush hour, and several stretches have variable speed limits. Trans-Pennine roads such as the A628 and A635 climb steeply out of Tameside and Oldham.
Public transport is the strongest in the North West. Metrolink trams run to Bury, Altrincham, Rochdale, Oldham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Eccles, the airport and East Didsbury, and trains leave from Piccadilly, Victoria and Oxford Road. Services run late but not all night, and last trams can leave earlier than you expect. Check the final service home before you go out, and keep a taxi number to hand.
On the moors, weather changes fast. Fog and low cloud sit on Saddleworth and the A62 and A635 routes, and snow can close the high roads. Moorland lanes are unlit, with open drops and sheep on the road. Phone signal is patchy in the Pennine valleys. Share your location, and don't park on soft ground in wet weather.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Greater Manchester
Is dogging legal in Greater Manchester?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Greater Manchester?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Which parts of Greater Manchester does this guide cover?
All ten boroughs, from the city centre to the Pennine edge at Saddleworth and the Wigan side of the Mersey Valley. For Rossendale and the Lancashire hills, use the Lancashire guide.
Is the last tram or train home earlier than I think?
Often. Metrolink and rail services reduce late in the evening and on some routes stop well before midnight. Check the timetable for your own line before you travel.
How bad is the moorland weather on the Manchester side of the Pennines?
It can be harsh. Low cloud and ice are common above Saddleworth and Tameside from autumn to spring, and the sun sets around 16:20 in January. Use the daylight table on this page to plan.
