Dogging in Merseyside: area guide

Quick answer

Merseyside is a compact county around the Mersey estuary, with Liverpool at its centre, the Wirral across the water and sand dunes along the Sefton coast. This guide covers the roads, ferries, rail and daylight hours. It doesn't give out private spots.

The lie of the land in Merseyside

Merseyside is five boroughs: Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, Knowsley and St Helens. Liverpool sits on the north bank of the Mersey. Birkenhead and the Wirral face it from the south, and Southport anchors the northern end of the coast. Bootle, Crosby, Prescot and Huyton fill in the gaps.

The water defines the county. The Mersey estuary is wide, the Dee estuary lines the western side of the Wirral, and Sefton's coast runs north in a long belt of sand dunes and pinewoods near Formby. Inland, the land is mostly flat farmland and old industrial sites, with a few gentle ridges.

Because the county is small, it empties fast at the edges. Farm roads in West Lancashire and the quiet side of the Wirral can hold a busy line of cars at night for reasons that aren't clear from outside.

Getting about safely

The M62 ends at the edge of Liverpool, and the M57 and M58 loop round the north and east. The A580 East Lancashire Road heads towards Manchester, and the A565 runs up to Southport. Two road tunnels, the Queensway and Kingsway, link Liverpool and the Wirral, and both are tolled. The M53 runs down the Wirral, and the Mersey Gateway bridge at Runcorn is the next crossing upriver.

Merseyrail is the backbone of public transport. The Northern line runs to Southport, Ormskirk and Hunts Cross, and the Wirral line serves West Kirby, New Brighton, Chester and Ellesmere Port. Trains run late but stop overnight, so check the last service before you leave. The Mersey Ferry crosses between Liverpool and the Wirral for sightseeing trips, and Irish Sea ferries leave from Liverpool and Birkenhead.

The coast is the main hazard. The tide goes a long way out at Southport and across the Dee, and mud and soft sand can trap people. Hilbre Island can only be reached on foot at low tide. Winds off the estuary are strong, and fog is common in autumn. Keep to solid ground, keep an eye on the tide table and tell someone where you are.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Merseyside

Is dogging legal in Merseyside?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Merseyside?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Which parts of Merseyside does this guide cover?

The five boroughs: Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, Knowsley and St Helens. For Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington across the river, use the Cheshire guide.

Is the Wirral easy to reach from Liverpool at night?

By car, the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels run all day and night, and both charge a toll. By train, Merseyrail's Wirral line stops overnight, so book a taxi or plan your return before you cross.

Which guide should I use for the Chester and North Wales side of the Dee?

Chester is in Cheshire, and the far bank of the Dee estuary is in North Wales. Use the guides for those areas when you travel beyond the Wirral.
