The lie of the land in Glasgow and Clyde
Glasgow sits on the River Clyde and anchors the biggest built-up area in Scotland. Around it you find Paisley, Clydebank, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Coatbridge and Airdrie. Downriver, Greenock and Gourock face the Firth of Clyde, and Dumbarton guards the river's northern bank.
The city thins out quickly. North of the Clyde, the Kilpatrick Hills and the Campsie Fells rise above the suburbs, and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park starts within an hour of the centre. South and east, the Clyde Valley is a mix of orchards, farms and old mining villages. Moorland above Renfrewshire and Inverclyde gives long views over the water.
That mix means people travel in two directions. Some cross the city on short urban hops. Others drive out to the hills or the coast. Even quiet moorland roads can fill up on a mild evening for no clear reason, which is part of why this guide stays general.
Getting about safely
The M8 runs through the city centre and out to Paisley, Greenock and the airport, and it clogs at rush hour. The M74 and M73 carry traffic south and east towards Lanarkshire, the M77 heads south-west, and the M80 goes north to Stirling. The A82 follows Loch Lomond's western shore, and it is narrow, busy and prone to queues when anything goes wrong.
Rail is dense. Glasgow Central and Queen Street feed suburban lines to Paisley, Gourock, Wemyss Bay, East Kilbride, Hamilton and Helensburgh. The subway is handy inside the city but stops before midnight, and many suburban services thin out late. Look up your last train before you leave, or have a taxi plan. Ferries across the Clyde, such as Gourock to Dunoon, run on set timetables and can be cancelled in gales.
Beyond the suburbs, many B roads are unlit and bendy, with farm traffic and cyclists. Phone signal drops in the Clyde Valley gorges and on the high moors. Winter brings ice, wet leaves and low sun that can dazzle you on the M8. Tell someone your plan and keep your tank and phone topped up.

The law and your safety
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Glasgow and Clyde
Do you list dogging spots in Glasgow and Clyde?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Which places does the Glasgow and Clyde guide cover?
The city, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, the Clyde coast, Lanarkshire and the countryside north of Glasgow towards Loch Lomond.
How dark do winter evenings get around Glasgow?
Early. In December the sun sets before 16:30, so most of an evening drive is in the dark. The daylight table below shows the exact times by month.
Which guide should I use for Ayrshire or the Highlands?
Use the Ayrshire guide once you are past the Ayrshire coast and the A77 corridor. For Argyll, Loch Lomond's far side and beyond, use the Highlands and Argyll guide.
