The lie of the land in Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire sits just north of London, and much of it is Green Belt. Hertford is the county town. St Albans is a cathedral city, while Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Letchworth, Hitchin and Bishop's Stortford are the other main centres. Borehamwood and Cheshunt sit on the London edge.

The west of the county meets the Chilterns National Landscape, with chalk hills, beech woods and steep, winding roads around Tring and Berkhamsted. The north is open, rolling arable country towards Royston. The east is gentler farmland along the Essex border, and the River Lea and River Stort valleys run through it.

Towns are close together, so green gaps between them are narrow. That mix of busy roads and quiet fields means a lay-by or lane can look empty for hours and then fill for no obvious reason. People arrive from north London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex, so the county feels like a crossroads more than a destination.

Getting about safely

Road links are strong. The M25 runs along the southern edge, the A1(M) runs north past Hatfield, Welwyn and Stevenage, and the M1 skirts the western side. The M10 is a short spur at St Albans. The A414 crosses the county east to west, the A10 serves the Lea valley, the A505 links Hitchin to Royston and the A120 runs to Bishop's Stortford. Junctions around the M25 and A1(M) jam at rush hour.

Rail is frequent. The East Coast Main Line calls at Stevenage and Hitchin, Thameslink serves St Albans, Harpenden and Hatfield, and the West Coast Main Line serves Watford Junction and Hemel Hempstead. Last trains from London run around midnight, and branch services end earlier. Metropolitan line trains reach Watford and Chesham is just over the border. Plan your return before you set out.

Roads in the Chilterns and the quiet north are narrow, unlit and often bordered by hedges and ditches. Deer cross on the A-roads at dawn and dusk. Chalk lanes can be slippery in frost and flooded in heavy rain. Phone signal is usually good, but it can fade in the valleys. Tell a friend where you are heading and when you expect to be back.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Hertfordshire

Is dogging legal in Hertfordshire?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Hertfordshire?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Which areas does the Hertfordshire guide cover?

All of the county, from Watford and the M25 edge to Royston and the Cambridgeshire border. Barnet and Enfield are London boroughs, so use the Greater London guide for them.

Can I use this guide for Luton or Dunstable?

No. Luton and Dunstable are in Bedfordshire, which has its own guide. Hertfordshire borders it near Harpenden and Hitchin, so both guides can help if you travel across the line.
