Dogging in Essex: area guide

Quick answer

The lie of the land in Essex

Essex stretches from the edge of London to the Suffolk border, with the Thames Estuary to the south and the North Sea to the east. Chelmsford is the county town and a city. Colchester and Southend-on-Sea are cities too. Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood, Braintree, Maldon, Clacton and Harwich fill in the map. Thurrock, around Grays and Tilbury, sits on the Thames.

The south and west lean towards London, with dense towns and busy roads. The north and east are quieter. The Dedham Vale National Landscape on the Suffolk border is rolling farmland, and the Dengie peninsula, the Blackwater, Crouch and Colne estuaries and the saltmarsh coast are flat, open and sparsely built. Mersea Island and Canvey Island are both reached by short roads over water.

People come from east London, Kent across the Dartford Crossing, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Even in the countryside, a track or road can be busy at odd hours without anyone being able to say why. We leave out names and places and describe only the county.

Getting about safely

The M25 clips the western side, and the M11 runs north from London past Harlow towards Cambridge and Stansted Airport. The A12 is the main route from Chelmsford to Colchester, and the A13 and A127 serve Southend and the Thames side. The A120 links Braintree and Stansted to Harwich, while the A130 runs between Chelmsford and Basildon. Crashes on the A12 and A13 can back traffic up for miles.

Greater Anglia trains run from London Liverpool Street to Chelmsford, Colchester and beyond, and c2c trains run from Fenchurch Street to Southend, Grays and Tilbury. Central line trains serve Loughton and Epping. Last trains from London are usually around midnight, and many stations on the east side have no staff late on. Book a taxi or check your last service before you go. Harwich has ferry links to the Netherlands.

Essex lanes can be narrow, unlit and bordered by deep ditches. The coast brings its own risks. The causeway to Mersea Island floods on the highest tides, and saltmarsh and mud flats can cut off a walker fast. Fog rolls off the estuaries on cold nights. Foulness island is a restricted military area, so keep out. Phone signal is patchy near the creeks. Share your location with someone you trust.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Essex

Is dogging legal in Essex?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Essex?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Does this guide cover the Essex towns on the London border?

Yes. It covers the whole county, from Thurrock, Brentwood and Epping to Colchester, Harwich and Clacton. The London boroughs of Havering, Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham are in the Greater London guide.

What should I know about winter evenings in Essex?

The sun sets before five from November to January, and country roads away from the towns are unlit. Fog and ice are common on the flat east side. Allow extra time, keep your phone charged and tell someone your plans.
