The lie of the land in Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire is split between three local authorities, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton. Bedford is the county town on the River Great Ouse. Luton is the largest town and home to London Luton Airport. Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Biggleswade, Sandy, Ampthill and Flitwick are the other main towns.

The south-west edge rises into the Chilterns National Landscape, with chalk hills above Dunstable. The Greensand Ridge runs across the middle of the county, and the north is flat clay and river meadow along the Ouse. The old brickworks in the Marston Vale left lakes and low ground that suit wildlife more than traffic. Villages are small and farms are large.

The county has no coast and no big forest, so most movement follows the main roads. Drivers come from Milton Keynes, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire. Quiet places can become busy without any obvious reason, and the spread of farms and fields means the lanes between them are rarely lit.

Getting about safely

The M1 crosses the county from junction 9 near Harpenden to the Milton Keynes edge, and it is often heavy around Luton. The A1 runs through Sandy and Biggleswade on the eastern side. The A6 links Luton, Bedford and Rushden, the A5 and A421 cross the west, and the A507 and A428 run east to west. Roadworks and crashes on the M1 can clog the whole network.

Rail follows the Midland Main Line through Luton, Luton Airport Parkway, Harlington, Flitwick and Bedford, with Thameslink and East Midlands Railway services. The East Coast Main Line calls at Arlesey, Biggleswade and Sandy. The Marston Vale line runs between Bedford and Bletchley. Last trains from London usually leave around midnight, and the branch line stops earlier. Check before you travel.

Lanes in the clay vale are narrow and flat, with deep ditches and few lights. Fog settles early on cold nights, and the Ouse floods low roads in wet winters. Chalk tracks on the Chilterns edge can be steep and slippery. Signal drops in the folds of the hills. Share your location with a friend and keep your phone charged.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Bedfordshire

Is dogging legal in Bedfordshire?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Bedfordshire?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Does this guide include Luton and Milton Keynes?

It includes Luton, because Luton is part of Bedfordshire. Milton Keynes is in Buckinghamshire, so use that guide for it.

How do I plan a journey across the county after dark?

Stick to main roads where you can. The A1, A6 and M1 are lit in places, but the lanes between villages are not. Check for flooding near the Great Ouse in wet weather and allow extra time on foggy nights.
