The lie of the land in Kent

Kent runs from the Thames Estuary and the Medway towns in the north to the Channel coast in the south and east. Maidstone is the county town. Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham make up the Medway cluster, while Canterbury, Dartford, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Margate, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells each pull in their own crowds. Commuter towns on the London edge feel different from the seaside towns of Thanet.

The Kent Downs and the High Weald are both protected National Landscapes, so large parts of the county are farmland, orchards, woodland and quiet lanes. The Thames Estuary marshes, the Isle of Sheppey and Romney Marsh are flat, open and exposed, with big skies and few buildings. The white cliffs around Dover and Folkestone give the coast a different shape from the shingle of Dungeness.

Because so much of Kent is rural, a small number of places can feel busy for no obvious reason. That is one more reason we don't name them. People often travel in from London, Essex and Sussex, because the motorway and rail links make the county easy to reach in under an hour.

Getting about safely

The M2, M20 and A2 carry most traffic, and the M25 and the Dartford Crossing mark the western edge. The A249 links Maidstone to Sheppey, the A299 Thanet Way heads for the north-east coast and the A21 runs south to Tonbridge and Hastings. Lorry queues for the Channel ports regularly slow the M20 and the roads around Dover and Folkestone, so check traffic before you leave.

High-speed rail links connect London St Pancras to Ebbsfleet, Ashford, Canterbury West and the coast, and Southeastern trains run to most towns. Last trains leave earlier than people expect, and some branch lines stop before midnight. Check your last train or book a taxi home before you set off, because a missed connection at an empty station is a poor place to wait.

Away from the towns, many Kent lanes are narrow, unlit and winding, with high hedges and sudden bends. Deer cross at dusk and dawn. Phone signal can drop in the Downs valleys, the Weald and parts of the marshes. On the coast, check tide times before walking on shingle or mud, and take care near cliff edges after rain. Share your location with a friend and keep your phone charged.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Kent

Is dogging legal in Kent?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Kent?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Which parts of Kent does this guide cover?

The whole county, from the Medway towns and the Thames Estuary to the Channel coast and the Weald.

How much does Channel port traffic affect journeys in Kent?

It can add a lot. When lorry queues build for Dover or the Channel Tunnel, the M20 and nearby A roads slow down, and local roads fill with diverted traffic. Check live traffic before a journey, allow extra time and keep fuel in the tank.
