The lie of the land in Swansea Bay

Swansea is Wales's second city and sits on a wide, curved bay. East of it, Neath and Port Talbot run along the coast, with the steelworks and the dunes beside them. West of Swansea, the Gower Peninsula was the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK, and it is now a National Landscape. It is a mix of cliffs, bays, commons and farmland.

Behind the coast, the land rises to wooded valleys such as the Afan and Neath valleys, and the Swansea Valley leads north to the Beacons. Pontardawe, Mumbles, Gorseinon and Briton Ferry are the other main places. The estuary of the River Loughor marks the western edge.

The area works as a hub for west Wales, so many people pass through on the way to Carmarthenshire or the valleys. Rural lanes on the Gower can fill with cars for no obvious reason, then empty again.

Getting about safely

The M4 runs north of the coast, with junctions 40 to 47 serving Port Talbot, Neath and Swansea, and the A483 links Swansea to Llanelli and west Wales. The A4118 crosses the Gower, and the A4067 follows the Swansea Valley north. Road signs are in Welsh and English, and traffic builds at rush hour around Swansea and Port Talbot.

Trains stop at Port Talbot Parkway, Neath and Swansea on the main line from London Paddington. The Heart of Wales line leaves from Swansea and runs north-east towards Shrewsbury. Local buses cover the Gower but stop early, and the last trains can leave sooner than you expect. Check your way home first.

The bay has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe. Flats of wet sand and mud can be far from the shore, and the tide returns fast, sometimes cutting off causeways to small islands. Gower cliffs are high, unstable and unlit. Lanes there are narrow with stone walls, and ponies and sheep graze on open commons, which makes night driving risky. Sand can blow across roads near the dunes. Phone signal can fade in the valleys and on the western Gower. Tell someone where you are going.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about Swansea Bay

Is dogging legal in Swansea Bay?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in Swansea Bay?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

Does this guide include the Gower?

Yes. The whole peninsula is included, along with Swansea, the Mumbles, Neath, Port Talbot and the valleys behind them.

Are Swansea Bay's tides that dangerous?

They deserve respect. The tide range is large, flat sand makes the shore look safe, and water can return quickly. Check tide tables for any coastal trip, and never walk on estuary mud in the dark.

Where do I look for guides to the east and west?

East is the Glamorgan Valleys and Bridgend guide. West is Dyfed and Mid Wales, which covers Carmarthenshire.
