The lie of the land in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan
Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and the centre of this area. It sits on the Severn Estuary, with Cardiff Bay, the city centre and wide suburbs running north towards the hills. Penarth lies across the bay. The Vale of Glamorgan begins just west, with Barry, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Rhoose, where Cardiff Airport is.
The Vale is mostly low farmland, villages and small woods, with a protected Heritage Coast of limestone cliffs facing the Bristol Channel. North of Cardiff, the land climbs into the edge of the South Wales valleys. The Bristol Channel has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world, which shapes the shoreline.
The city draws people from the valleys, from Newport and from across the Severn. Quiet rural corners of the Vale can still become busy for reasons nobody can explain. We don't name them.
Getting about safely
The M4 runs along the northern edge of the city, and junctions 29 to 34 serve it. The A48 runs through the Vale, and the A4232 links Cardiff Bay and the south to the motorway. The A470 heads north to Merthyr Tydfil and the Beacons. Rush hours are slow on the M4 and the city approaches, and Welsh and English road signs sit side by side.
Transport for Wales Valley Lines trains reach Penarth, Barry, Barry Island and the valleys, and the Vale of Glamorgan line links Cardiff with Bridgend through Rhoose. Cardiff Central is the hub for trains to London Paddington and Bristol. Evening and Sunday services are thinner than you might expect, so check the last train home.
Beyond the city, Vale lanes are narrow and unlit, with hedges and tight bends. Phone signal is usually good near Cardiff, but weaker on the coast and in valleys. The estuary and bay have soft mud and fast tides. Cliffs along the Heritage Coast are crumbly and sometimes closed, so stay away from edges at night. Tell someone your plan and check your route before you leave.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
