Dogging in Belfast: area guide
Belfast is Northern Ireland's biggest city, on the River Lagan at the head of Belfast Lough and ringed by hills. Northern Ireland has its own legal system, so English and Welsh law summaries do not apply here, and we have not yet published one for Northern Ireland. This guide covers the city, getting about safely and the daylight hours. It keeps private spots off the page.

The lie of the land in Belfast
Belfast sits on the east coast of Northern Ireland, at the head of Belfast Lough and the mouth of the River Lagan. The M1, M2 and M3 meet here, and the city is the hub for rail and bus links across the north and east. Lisburn is its neighbouring city, up the Lagan valley.
Hills ring the city. Cave Hill rises above the north shore, and Divis and Black Mountain, both dark basalt, stand to the west. National Trust land covers much of Divis and Black Mountain. A towpath follows the Lagan from Lisburn into the centre, and the Lagan Valley Regional Park runs along the river.
The city centre, the harbour and the suburbs are busy and well lit. Higher ground and the roads around the lough are quieter, more exposed and darker. We leave out names and places and describe only the area.
Getting about safely
The M1, M2 and M3 all meet at Belfast. Roads in the city and around the harbour are busy at rush hours, and the hills and the lough shore are much quieter after dark. Check traffic before you leave.
Translink runs the trains and buses. Belfast Grand Central opened in October 2024 and replaced the old Great Victoria Street station as the main rail hub. Late evening and Sunday services vary, so check your last train or bus before you go, or book a taxi home before you set off.
On the hills and along the lough, roads can be narrow, unlit and exposed, and weather can turn quickly. Phone signal can drop on high ground. Keep your phone charged and share your location with someone you trust.

The law and your safety
Northern Ireland: Northern Ireland has its own legal system, so our English and Welsh law summary does not apply. We have not yet published a legal summary for Northern Ireland, so check the position before you go.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
