The lie of the land in Tyne and Wear
Tyne and Wear is small and densely packed. Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead face each other across the river, with Sunderland to the south-east on the Wear. North Tyneside and South Tyneside run down to the coast at Tynemouth, South Shields and Whitburn.
Step beyond the built-up core and the character changes quickly. The Derwent valley reaches into the west of Gateshead, the Tyne Valley opens out west of Newcastle, and a green belt separates the conurbation from Northumberland and Durham. The coast is a mix of cliffs, harbour towns and wide sandy bays.
Because the urban area is so tight, most residents live within half an hour of open ground. Edge-of-town land can fill with cars on a dry evening for no obvious reason, and people also come in from further afield on the A1 and A19. That's why this guide treats the county as a whole.
Getting about safely
Three big roads frame the county. The A1 sweeps round Gateshead and Newcastle, the A19 crosses the Tyne through the Tyne Tunnel, and the A690 links Sunderland with Durham. The Tyne Tunnel is tolled. The A1058 Coast Road and the A194(M) back up at rush hour, and a crash on the Western Bypass can snarl the whole region.
The Tyne and Wear Metro has two lines. The Green line runs from Newcastle Airport through the city centre and Gateshead to Sunderland and South Hylton. The Yellow line loops from Newcastle round the coast through Whitley Bay and Tynemouth and on to South Shields. Services run late but not all night, so check your last Metro before you go. The Shields ferry crosses the Tyne between North and South Shields, and the Port of Tyne ferry sails to Amsterdam.
On the coast, sea fret can drop visibility in minutes, and cliff paths and piers get slippery in wet weather. Away from the main roads, the lanes of west Gateshead and the Derwent valley are narrow and unlit. Phone signal is strong across most of the county but thins in the valleys. Park where you can be seen and tell a friend where you are.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Tyne and Wear
Is dogging legal in Tyne and Wear?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Tyne and Wear?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Which parts of Tyne and Wear does this guide cover?
The five boroughs: Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. For the Northumberland coast and the Tyne Valley beyond Prudhoe, use the Northumberland guide, and for Durham city and the Wear upstream, use the Durham guide.
How do I get between Newcastle and Sunderland late at night?
By road, the A1 and A194(M) or the A184 and A19 are the usual routes, about 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. The Metro's Green line links the two cities but doesn't run all night, so plan a taxi as a fallback.
How dark does it get in Newcastle in winter?
In December the sun sets around 15:40, so evenings are long and dark. In June it stays light until after 22:00. The daylight table on this page lists every month.
