The lie of the land in North Humberside

This area sits north of the Humber estuary. Hull is the main city, with Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Goole, Hornsea and Withernsea spread across the East Riding. The ground is mostly flat, except for the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, which curve from the Humber in the south-west up to the coast at Flamborough Head.

To the east, the Holderness coast is among the fastest-eroding in Europe. Soft clay cliffs retreat each year, and old roads end abruptly at the edge. To the west and south, the Vale of York and the Humber levels are drained farmland with straight roads, big skies and few trees.

Much of the East Riding is quiet farmland and small villages, with long gaps between the lights of one and the next. Some rural stretches still seem to collect a crowd for no clear reason, so this guide sticks to general advice about the area.

Getting about safely

The M62 ends near Brough and becomes the A63 into Hull. The A614, the A164 to Beverley and the A165 to Bridlington cover the rest, and the A15 crosses the Humber Bridge into Lincolnshire. Roads here are mostly flat and straight, but they ice up on clear nights, and crosswinds on the Humber Bridge can bring restrictions for high vehicles.

Hull Paragon station has services to Doncaster, London King's Cross, Leeds and York, and a line runs on through Beverley to Bridlington and Scarborough. Goole sits on the line from Hull to Selby and Doncaster. Evening trains are fewer than on the main routes, so check the last one. P&O ferries sail from Hull to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge overnight.

Low ground floods after heavy rain, and tidal surges have hit Hull and the Humber banks before. Keep well clear of the Holderness cliff edges, because the clay slumps without warning. Sea fret rolls in quickly along the coast in spring and summer. Mobile signal is mostly good, but the Wolds have dips where it fades. Lanes there are narrow and unlit, and wind turbines and farm lorries add to the traffic after dark in harvest season.

Dusk ends is when civil twilight finishes, usually 30 to 50 minutes after sunset in southern England and longer further north. After that you need lights. Times shift by a few minutes across the area.

The law and your safety

England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.

Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.

Questions about North Humberside

Is dogging legal in North Humberside?

Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you list dogging spots in North Humberside?

No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.

What does this guide cover?

Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, from Goole and the Humber banks to Bridlington and the Holderness coast, plus the Yorkshire Wolds in between.

What about Scunthorpe and Grimsby, over the Humber?

They are across the water in Lincolnshire, so use the Lincolnshire guide for them. The Humber Bridge links the two areas by road.

Is the coast a hazard?

Yes. The Holderness cliffs erode fast and the ground near the edge can give way. Stay back, and watch sea fret in warmer months.
