The lie of the land in Dorset
Dorset has two faces. The south-east corner, around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, is one large built-up coastal area with the busiest roads. West and north of it, the county turns to chalk hills, small market towns and farmland. Dorchester is the county town, with Weymouth, Bridport, Blandford Forum, Wimborne Minster, Shaftesbury and Sherborne spread around it.
Most of the county is protected. The Dorset National Landscape covers a large share of it, and Cranborne Chase reaches in from the north-east. The coast is the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, with the shingle of Chesil Beach, the Isle of Portland and the Isle of Purbeck. Inland, the heaths of the east are open, sandy and dry in summer.
Because the county is so rural, people often travel in from the Bournemouth conurbation, Salisbury, Yeovil and Exeter. Quiet places can fill up for no clear reason. We don't name them.
Getting about safely
The A31 brings traffic in from the M27 and Hampshire, and the A35 runs the length of the county from Honiton in Devon past Bridport and Dorchester to Poole. The A30 crosses the north around Shaftesbury, and the A354 links Dorchester with Weymouth. In summer the coast roads queue, especially on sunny weekends.
Trains are good along the main line. South Western Railway runs from London Waterloo through Bournemouth and Poole to Dorchester South and Weymouth. The Heart of Wessex line links Weymouth and Dorchester West with Yeovil, Bath and Bristol. Services thin out in the evening and on Sundays, and the west of the county has few stations. Check the last train before you leave.
Dorset lanes are often sunken, narrow and unlit, with high hedges and sharp bends. Fog gathers in the river valleys on cold nights. Phone signal can disappear on the downs and in deep valleys. On the heaths, dry weather brings a real fire risk in summer, and cliff edges on the Jurassic Coast crumble and slip, so keep well back from them in the dark. Some coastal land is used for military training and is closed on set days. Tell someone your plan and keep your phone charged.

The law and your safety
England and Wales: sex outdoors is not automatically an offence. It can become one if members of the public are likely to see it. Charities such as the Terrence Higgins Trust give the same advice. Read their public sex environments guide.
Wherever you are, the basics don't change. Get a clear yes from everyone. Tell someone where you're going. Stay sober. Keep out of sight of anyone who hasn't agreed to see you. Use condoms, and use a new one with each partner.
Questions about Dorset
Is dogging legal in Dorset?
Having sex outdoors is not automatically a crime in England and Wales. It becomes an offence when members of the public can see it, for example outraging public decency or indecent exposure. Sex in a public toilet is an offence. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you list dogging spots in Dorset?
No. This guide covers the area, not private places. We don't name car parks, lay-bys or woods, because other people use them too and visitors can end up in trouble.
Does this guide cover Bournemouth and Poole as well as rural Dorset?
Yes. It covers the whole ceremonial county, including the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area, the Purbeck coast and the rural north and west.
How dark do Dorset evenings get?
Winter dusk comes before five, and rural lanes have no street lighting. The daylight table shows sunrise, sunset and the end of twilight for Dorchester, which is close to the county average.
Which nearby guide should I read for travel into Dorset?
Most journeys arrive via Hampshire on the A31 or the main rail line, via Wiltshire on the A350 and A303 corridor, or via Somerset and Devon on the A35 and A30. Check those guides if you are crossing a border.
